In the early 1900s, the land that is now Carmel Valley was used primarily for farming and cattle grazing. It wasn't until the 1970s and 1980s that the area began to be developed as a residential community. Today, the community has a population of around 50,000 residents, making it one of the larger and more affluent neighborhoods in San Diego.

The community's upscale reputation is reflected in its real estate prices.
